Let's Spread Kindness Together

It’s random acts of kindness week so we thought it would be fun to share a list of ideas that you can share in doing around your neighborhood or community. There are hundreds of ideas out there, but to get you started you’ll find several different bullet points below that may help to inspire some of those ideas of your own.

One thing we can all agree on is that simply doing good feels good, and we want to add another element of fun to that so when you spread kindness we’ll also spread some love with a few prizes purchased from “locally owned businesses” that everyone will have an opportunity to win courtesy of The Gardner Team.

We believe that to truly “spread” kindness there shouldn’t be restrictions, so please feel free to share your acts from wherever you are — should your name be drawn we will make sure to send you a gift certificate that can be used anywhere!!

The Power of Kindness

When you spread goodwill everyone benefits. The kindness you initiate leaves an impression that inspires more kindness that spreads from one person to another like a ripple effect. We’d like to put the power of kindness to the test with a fun challenge EVERYONE can participate in right on our facebook page. This is not a competition, just a fun challenge to spread kindness and be kind to one another. Of course The Gardner Family will pitch in with some random acts of kindness too, making a point to be more aware and act on opportunities all around us to spread kindness – but we will not be entering the drawing, that’s fun is reserved just for you!

To kick off the week I performed several Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) to pay it forward and make another persons day – but the one I felt was the most profound today was free! When I made a point to make eye contact with more people and smile big – that simple gesture never failed to make the other person smile back and in that moment, it made both of us happy! So here’s to smiling purposefully!

Be a good neighbor, pay it forward with a random act of kindness in your neighborhood or community.

Leave a comment and share what you’ve done on our facebook page.
You can enter more than once, the goal is to spread as much kindness possible. Each post will be automatically entered into our “Good Neighbor” drawing.
Random Acts of Kindness week runs Monday, February 13th through 19th, 2012. Make sure to submit your comments/post during that time frame to be entered into our “Good Neighbor” drawing to be held Monday with all winners announced here on our blog and facebook page. Make sure to check back, we will post the winners names and request that you email us at @amber@gardnerteam.net if at that time you see yours so we can make arrangements at that point to deliver or mail your prize.

Ideas to Spread Acts of Kindness in Your Neighborhood or Community

Say “Thanks-A-Latte” for being a good neighbor with a coffee gift card from your “local” coffee shop. Leave it on your neighbors doorstep with a little note of appreciation from you.
Plant flowers at a neighborhood school.
Clean up litter on a stretch of road in your neighborhood.
Clean up your neighborhood park.
Make a point to smile and wave at everyone, and wish them a good day.
Be a good neighbor and offer to spruce up the yard of a neighbor or friend who is ill or who has just had surgery or a death in the family.
Organize spring and fall clean-up projects. Choose an area that needs attention and collect debris, abandoned items, and other materials that have collected in the area.
Welcome a new neighbor with a welcome basket or baked treat.
Be a good Samaritan and roll an elderly neighbor’s garbage cans to or from the curb on pick-up day.
Put together a charity run/walk through your neighborhood streets. Runners either pay an entrance fee or get sponsors for their run with money raised going to a charity, like Liam’s Six Dollar Club!
Get a group together to drive to a children’s facility and distribute Random Acts of Kindness bookmarks with kindness quotes on them that you have made.
Be a good citizen, hold the door open for someone.
Don’t participate in gossip or bullying.
Gather a few neighbors to adopt an entrance to your neighborhood and periodically have a get-together to keep it weeded and cleaned up. Serve refreshments and make it fun like a Saturday morning party!
Offer to share your skills at your local school such as reading, writing, or math help.
Create “Kindness – Pass It On” cards for residents to pass from one person to another to accompany kind acts that they do for one another. The card might have a simple graphic with the words: “This act of kindness was performed especially for you. Please offer an act of kindness to someone else, and pass this card on to that person.” Here’s a fun idea that’s being spread all over, check out what our sons teacher is doing with her Kindness Kard campaign!
Collect teddy bears for police officers to give to traumatized children. Attach a note to each teddy bear for the donating resident to sign. Invite a police officer and/or trauma social worker to your neighborhood HOA meeting to accept the bears and speak to the residents briefly about the role kindness plays during a traumatic time of need. If you’d like you can also donate any “new” stuffed animals to a local campaign that collects annually. Also spearheaded by our sons teacher Lindsay Walker, her mission brings people of all ages together to collect animals for the Michael Grimm Foundation. Each “With Love From Michael” animal is donated to our very own local children’s hospitals to bring joy to children in treatment there. Something you may have also heard about or seen through “Stuff the Truck” projects held around Sherwood.

The annual all you can eat Sherwood High School (SHS) dungeness crab feed fundraiser & silent auction in Sherwood is underway. This much anticipated Sherwood event will again take place at the Sherwood Robin Hood Elks Lodge on Saturday, January 28th from 5:00 to 9:00 pm.

Tickets are on sale now for $35 each for this all you can eat crab cracking feast! Come support a great cause, but hurry you’ll need those tickets so get yours before they’re all sold out! Tickets are available through any SHS baseball player, or by contacting info@sherwoodjuniorbaseball.com.

How many of you have heard of a Bean Pot? Well let me tell you, this is the best way to prepare fast and easy meals. With long work days, busy family schedules and football season – and we know how that goes especially here in Sherwood (home to the 5A State Champions) breaking out the crock-pot can be a life saver for many… But if you haven’t heard of or don’t already own a Bean Pot it’s time you do. They not only make a beautiful presentation on the counter in your kitchen or dining room table in your home, they’re fantastic to have and cook with.

Free Recipes

To get you cookin’ here’s a few GREAT recipes for your Bean Pot

Beer Bread
3 cups of Self Rising Flour
1/4 cup of sugar
1 can of beer

Mix all the ingredients and bake at 350 degrees for 30 – 40 min. depending on size of pan or bowl using. This is great to bake in the Celebrating Home Bean Pot.

Taco Soup (Tonya’s Favorite)

1 Lb ground beef, cooked & drained

1 – 28 oz can kidney beans*

1 – 28 oz can diced tomatoes*

1 -14 oz can corn * (*DO NOT drain liquid)

Add all ingredients into the bean pot and cover.

Add 1-2 packets of taco seasoning OR 1 pkg Celebrating Home Southwestern Chipotle dip mix and stir.

Cook in microwave for 20 minutes.

Serve with sour cream, cheese and corn chips.

Chicken Stew

Place chicken breast in a Bean Pot.

Add 1 can chicken broth,

1 Can Cream of chicken and 1

pkg Onion Soup Mix.

Cook at 250 for at least 4 hours. Add string beans and pour over angel hair pasta.

Bachelors Roast

Place roast (about 3 lbs.) in Bean Pot

Pour 1 can of Coke

Spread 2 cups of catchup on top

Cover with the lid.

Cook for about 30 minutes per pound.

Optional: Add onions and pressed garlic.

Autumn Decorating Ideas …. Continued:

1. For a fragrant treat, fill a ceramic bowl or a wood or wicker basket with oranges, lemons,pine-cones, nuts, and pieces of evergreen. Place the container just inside the front door for a special welcome home.

2. Decorate a wreath for your front door with clusters of berries, ornamental grasses, and other fall finds. Purchase a wreath form at a local crafts store, then simply attach the berries and grasses with wire or hot glue.

3. Lead trick-or-treater’s to your door or dinner guests to the back patio with country luminaries made with old glass jars. Put a bit of sand in the jar and set a small candle in the sand. Line the sidewalk with the luminaries or even hang them from trees with wire. If you plan ahead, you can also order battery operated tea-light candles which are perfect for projects like this. Battery operated tea-light candles are also safe to use in paper bag projects.

4. Make an autumn garland for your mantle with colorful apples. Use an awl or knitting needle to pierce through the apples from side to side. Pull twine through the hole and knot it to hold the apple in place. Spice up the display by alternating apples with gourds, walnuts, or leaves.

5. Accent a door or wall with a swag of Indian corn. Use twine to connect the ears, knotting the twine after adding each ear. Tuck in pressed maple leaves for even more color. Then loop the twine at the top to hang.

The Gardner Boys: Tyler, Mason and Gavon have taken on a fundraiser to help find a cure for cancer. All proceeds raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society’s Sherwood Relay For Life 2011 (Team Liam).

They are selling these cool bracelets in “Relay Purple” which symbolizes every type of cancer for just $2 each. You can get yours on Saturday August 6th at the Sherwood High School during the 2011 Relay for Life Event. Come down anytime, we “Sherwood” love for you to experience it, even if only for a minute to get your bracelet. Their teams mission as stated on the bracelet: We “Sherwood” Love to Find a Cure.

About Relay for Life 2011

Join us this Saturday August 6th at 10:00am & Sunday August 7th at 10:00am at Sherwood High School for the 2011 Relay for Life of Sherwood!

There’s an amazing list of entertainment and activities lined up for everyone at this year’s event. As always, our Relay kicks off with Opening Ceremonies followed by the Survivor Lap. The Silent Auction (chaired by Team Liam) opens at noon on Saturday with auctions closing at 2:30, 3:30, 4:30 and 5:30.

The Sherwood YMCA will be hosting the Kid’s Zone from 11am – 7pm with fun activities for kids of all ages. Catch Zumba Dance with Brynn Sylvester at 11:00am Saturday, and the unforgettable ‘Miss-ter’ Relay contest at 3:00pm on Saturday (Our oldest son Tyler is a great sport and will be participating in Miss-ter’ Relay for the second year in a row).

Great Main Stage entertainers will be Matt Buhler at Noon on Saturday, Joseph Conty at 5:00pm and Radiyo Silence at 8:00pm. Don’t miss the moving Luminaria Ceremony at 10:00pm. And of course you can check out the schedule of events to find out more!

Music on the Green is a signature Sherwood event. Hosted every summer at Stella Olsen Park, you can come enjoy a variety of music every Wednesday at 6:30 pm starting July 6th through August 17th. We feel very fortunate to have spent our first 6 years with John L. Scott Real Estate. Working out of the Sherwood John L. Scott offices throughout that time, we’ve had the opportunity to serve our clients well in a changing real estate climate.

Designing homes in or around Portland for the Senses

Touch – Fill your home with fabrics and upholstery that comfort. Chenille throws, silk sheets, Cotton linens and towels, fluffy pillows, down comforters, plush sofas – you will know if it’s right just by touch. When shopping for fabrics or upholstered furniture run your hands across the surface. Ask yourself “How does it feel?” and “How does it make me feel”?

Sight- Lovely things make us happy that’s why we strive to create a visually pleasing home environment. For some of us that means using soothing colors and neutrals while to others it means using vibrant colors. The key is to choose decorative pieces and color palettes that fit your personality so that when you look at your home it brings you joy. This Crescent Moon and Fusion artwork is a great example of that.

Smell – We like things that smell good hence the multi-billion dollar home fragrance and perfume industry. Fragrances play a very special part in making us feel at home they can make us feel warm and comfortable as Vanilla does or whisk us away to exotic places as does the combination of mango and citrus or make us think of the Christmas holidays as do the scents of baked apple pie (cider), evergreen (Christmas Trees) and hot cinnamon roll (fresh cinnamon rolls baking). Sound – Soothing sounds are welcome and that’s what you want to strive toward in creating a sound decor in your home. Loud, abrupt noises create stress and will lead to your eventual unhappiness in your home.

Taste – Yes, this may sound odd but it really isn’t. When decorating your home you can use fruit and vegetables as decor. It’s decor that’s good for you A personal favorite is to fill clear glass bowls with an interesting color combination. Here’s some cookbooks, also a great visual with any kitchen decor.
