While shopping at a fun, unique and independently owned toy store, Mud Puddles Toys and Books here in our hometown Sherwood Oregon,   I ran across this novel concept of butterfly gardening.  Beyond being a partner in Sherwood's well known real estate team, I'm an active volunteer in our local Sherwood schools as well.  I found this to be a great classroom piece, and I'm excited to pick this up for a fun and informative second grade classroom science project.

This complete butterfly pavilion kit makes it very easy to do at home too.  If you're looking for a great way to add more color to your home garden, a do-it-your-self project for the whole family to enjoy or maybe you're after that unique birthday gift?  Consider this.

Butterfly Pavilion - Watch as caterpillars turn into beautiful Painted Lady butterflies.

(news photo)With the holiday season fast approaching, we figured you'd want to know more about picking out the best toys for children.

Here's a local enjoying his time around the tracks... Click this Mudpuddles photo to read one of Mudpuddles featured articles in the Sherwood Gazette Newspaper.

Then stop by for a visit in the store where you can sample one of every toy, or visit the website for the hottest toy selection this season!

Looking for something to do with the little ones?  Check out Mudpuddles events calendar, they offer weekly events from craft projects, story time to other special events year-around.  Subscribe to their free newsletter for more information and coupons.  It's a great resource!

butterfly gardening, butterfly gardens

butterfly garden, butterfly gardening, garden for butterflies, attract butterflies

Okay, for those of you excited about pursuing this fun adventure in butterfly gardenting, I've captured a few helpful tips to help you achieve success in your journey.

If you didn't know, butterfly gardening has become one of the most popular hobbies today.... News to me too, but I can now see why.  After all, what could bring more joy than a beautiful butterfly fluttering around your garden and the smiles they bring to everyone of all ages.

Remember back to a conversation you may have been having with a neighbor outside... Did you find yourself in a moment of distraction and comment on the beautiful butterfly there for a quick visit, a rare bird that just landed on the lawn in front of you or even a bright rainbow stretched across the sky?  These quick gifts in life always capture part of any conversation and simply bring joy to others.

Now keeping these beautiful creatures around is another project all in itself.  Here are some tips to make your garden especially butterfly-friendly.  Your first step should be to find out which butterflies are in your area.  To do this, you can do some research on the Internet, visit Sherwood's new local library for some great books and resources or make a visit to Al's Garden Center in Sherwood Oregon.  They have a huge variety of plants, flowers, special food and a friendly, informative and well educated staff that can help.

Plant your butterfly garden in a sunny location (5-6 hours of sun each day), but sheltered from the winds. Butterflies need the sun to warm themselves, but they won't want to feed in an area where they are constantly fighting the wind to stay on the plants. It is also a good idea to place a few flat stones on the ground in your sunny location so the butterflies can take a break while warming up.

Butterflies need water just like we do. Keep a mud puddle damp in a sunny location, or fill a bucket with sand and enough water to make the sand moist.  And of course, DON'T USE PESTICIDES IN YOUR GARDEN!

Butterflies use two different types of plants - those that provide nectar for the adults to eat (nectar plant), and those that provide food for their offspring (host plant).  It is best to find out which plant species are native to your area and plant those rather than exotic species.  Al's Garden Center will have everything you'll need to be successful in your type of garden.

It's really a win-win, you'll enjoy the process, it's a great stress reliever and a beautiful garden always increases your property value.  Have fun with it!

Even though we're nearing Winter, it's never to late to take up gardening!

Maybe you have a green thumb and you've already been gardening this year or you're like me and didn't have time and wish that you would have, and you're already thinking about what you'll do next year when the season rolls around... Well, guess what, it's never to late to have a garden!  There's always "Winter Gardening"

Here's some GREAT information I found and had to share...

The zucchini is starting to produce and summer salads are a staple of evening dinners. It's tempting at this time of the year to put your feet up, relax and enjoy the bounty of your hard work. Yet by November, I'm often left wishing I had put in a little more effort in July so that I could harvest fresh food through the wintertime.

July is the ideal month to start a winter garden. A couple of weeks seeding and transplanting will result in a kitchen garden that will produce well into the springtime.

The first step is deciding what to grow. No need to restrict yourself to cabbage and Brussels sprouts, fall & winter gardening can include a variety of lovely edibles:

Seed

Arugula
Bloomsdale Spinach
Cherry Belle Radish
Cilantro
Echinacea
Giant Red Mustard
Greenleaf Beets
Mesclun Mix
Mizuna
Oregon Sugar Pod Peas
Red Russian Kale
Rouge D'hiver Lettuce
Scarlet Nantes Carrots
Tatsoi

Time to plant

July-early Sept
July-August
Sept-October
July-August

early-mid July

The next step is to find room in the garden. Although my squash plants are filling in every inch of their bed, I can usually find space where my spring veggies used to reside. Often enough, there's now room since the lettuce and early spring greens are all harvested. If it's still too early to pull out your plants, you find a small patch in the garden and start a nursery bed. I enjoy putting all my seedlings close together like this so that I can keep an eye out on watering and pest problems. The other option is to start seeds indoors and transplant them later. If I know I won't be around to water during the day, I try to start seedlings indoors. I do get much better germination rates and it does save quite a bit of space.

Once the seedlings have been started and are in place, they usually don't need any special care until about September. As the nights begin to cool, draping some of the less hardy plants like the winter lettuce and cilantro with a floating row cover protects them from light frosts. On the coast and in mild winter areas, a floating row cover is enough to protect seedlings from mild frosts, up to about 30 F (-2 C). In colder areas, a plastic cloche or a cold-frame can be used to keep these vegetables cropping.

One thing to keep in mind about growing under plastic is that plants will require extra watering since they won't receive any rainfall moisture.

Once plants like Kale & cabbage are hit by a good frost, you'll notice a remarkable difference in the taste. Most winter vegetables use sugar as a natural anti-freeze. As temperatures become colder, they fill their cells with sugar to prevent water in their systems from crystallizing. It's another added bonus to growing a winter garden!

Back to School Already?

There's no doubt about it, the smell of school is in the air.

As summer turns to autumn, the falling leaves and cooler weather come as welcome reminders that a new school year is right around the corner. To help ease the transition as your students head out the door, here are some tips from your friendly local real estate team "The Gardner Team" to ensure that they're ready (even if they're not exactly willing):

  • Be sure students have received all required immunizations and physicals-particularly if they participate in extracurricular sports-and that registration forms are completed.
  • Encourage school-year sleeping patterns a few weeks before school starts to help with the transition to early bedtimes and wake up calls.
  • Make a list of contact information in case your student needs to get in touch with you at any point throughout the day. Include work, home, and/or cell phone numbers.
  • Pick the right backpack! School books are heavy and can lead to back pain or injury without using the proper transport. www.Ebags.com and www.Jansport.com both offer a wide variety of comfortable ergonomic packs that will help ease your student's load.
  • Create a transportation plan for the trip to and from school, and make sure your student knows where to go, and how to get there, after school.
  • Stock up on school supplies. Some schools distribute supply lists before the year begins, or you can find specific lists by grade level on www.Staples.com.
  • Tuck an extra dollar or two in your child's backpack for an emergency (like forgetting their lunch money).
  • And last, but not least, don't forget the apple!

By the way, if you know of someone thinking about buying or selling a home that would appreciate the same level of service we provide to our clients and community, please forward their name and telephone number to us.  We're never too busy to follow up with them and we appreciate your time, your trust and your referrals.

Have a great rest of the summer and best wishes for a happy fall, and a successful school year!

Sincerely,

Jason and Amber Gardner

FSBO's - Are You Planning to Sell Your Home Yourself?

Are you thinking of selling your home yourself?

Food for Thought...

As licensed Oregon Realtors and specialists in the Sherwood community, we understand the nuances of our real estate market and we always get the optimum price with our years of professional experience, respected name and seamless success formula of our proven Signature Home Selling System.

You really don't save a commission working without a Realtor, because only a licensed Realtor has the tools and proven marketing technique to sell your home for the highest possible price, in the shortest amount of time.  Did you know that over 50% of those who try to sell their home on their own do not sell at all or they sell at less than the current market value and that over 70% of FSBO's end up listing with a Realtor anyway!

While some homeowners are looking to save money by selling their home on their own, buyers are looking to save time by coming to us.  The best chance of getting the highest possible price is by exposing your home to the most people - A sign in the yard and blurb in the local paper isn't enough anymore... Over 87% of homebuyers start their home search online, over 70% also use Home Magazine's to locate a home, and a large majority of buyers want to see Professional Photos, Virtual tours, Single Property Websites, Full Color Flyers, they're actively looking for Open Houses, request Comparison Reports and Personal Home Showings from their Realtor and so on...

This is what you have to ask yourself...

  1. Do you have the time for this?
  2. Are you willing to absorb the labor and costs of all the necessary advertising?
  3. Do you have a professional marketing campaign to execute in a timely manner?
  4. Are you able to insure you're spending time with legitimate prospects that are pre-screened and pre-qualified?   Or are you missing out on the most serious, willing and able buyers in the marketplace?
  5. Are you emotionally prepared to carry out your own listing and potentially handle the legalities, contacts, inspections, contingencies, conditions and the processing of all the necessary documents... Are you ready for all that?

Let us show you how we would propose to sell your home.  Call The Gardner Team, for a no obligation consultation today.  It's never too late to ask for help!

Warmly & Respectfully,

Jason and Amber Gardner, Realtors & Sherwood Local Experts
